Age 39 years enlisted August 10, 1862 as 1st Lieutenant Commissioned an officer in the Massachusetts 10th Light Artillery Battery on 09 Sep 1862. Promoted to Full Captain on 27 Feb 1865. Mustered out on 09 Jun 1865 at Galloup's Island, Boston, MA. Promoted to Brevet Major on 13 Mar 1865.

JOSHUA WEBB ADAMS was born on June 9, 1823 in Brunswick, Maine. He married Hannah Maria Hall also of Brunswick and they had two children, Henry K. and Ann Maria Adams. He was a descendent of Henry Adams, who came over from Devonshire, England in 1630. At the age of 25 he moved to Boston.
In 1862 Governor Andrew commissioned Adams a 1st Lieutenant in the 10th Mass Light Artillery Battery. After the battle of Hatcher’s Run, Lieutenant Adams was handsomely complimented by Generals’ Smythe, McAllister and Humphrey’s “for the skillful and effective manner in which guns of the 10th battery, under his direction, enfiladed the enemy’s advancing lines and saved the 2nd division from being flanked and captured.” In March of 1865, General Hazard, recognizing the gallantry and ability of Captain Adams, also placed battery “B” of the 1st Rhode Island under his command. President Johnson breveted him major for bravery on the field. He was an active temperance man throughout his lifetime.
Massachusetts State Police Chief Constable William Sterling King appointed Joshua Adams as a state police deputy constable for Suffolk County in 1865. He was one of the first constables appointed to Suffolk County by General King and served as his Executive Officer. Joshua Adams served as a constable for one year. He died on January 5, 1890 and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Brunswick, Maine.
