"One of the earliest settlers of Blue Branch was Edwin Volney Ruthven, a native American who served in the 17th Infantry Regiment of the Union Army and was thereafter known as 'Colonel'. Ruthven was born 24 Feb 1824 in Bowling Green Kentucky and died 1 Aug 1917 in Blue. He married Fibia LaGrand Parker 16 Oct 1854 and they lived in McMinnville, Tenn where all but one of their 8 children were born."
Colonel Edwin Volney Ruthven came to Texas in 1876 according to his death certificate. He was an early settler in Blue Branch (Blue), Lee county, Texas. Colonel Ruthven was the postmaster for many years at the post office that was located at the present site of the Lexington-Elgin-Giddings-McDade crossroads. This was the first Blue post office. According to his death certificate, his parents were William Ruthven and Prudence Jones. It also shows he was born in Bowling Green KY.
