MERKEL, Christian, for many years he was a well known and esteemed resident of Reading. He died, in his 86th year, last Thursday in Cumru Twp., this county, at the home of his son. (2-1-1814ed.)

Christian1 Merkel, son of Christian (John Christian)
Mercklin (Merkel) Sr and
Catharine (Anna Catharina) Benner (Bender), was born either in Holland or
America. In childhood he lived with his parents in Richmond Township of Berks
County Pennsylvania. In adulthood he made his home in Reading, Exeter Township,
Berks County, Pennsylvania, attending the Trinity Lutheran Church there. He was
a blacksmith by occupation and was County Commissioner of Berks County from 1767
to 1770. He acquired the 100 acres of land of his father in law in April of
1767 by buying out the other heirs. This land was located (in 1767) in Alsace &
Exeter Townships, Berks Co., PA.
On November 14, 1758 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania he married Juliana Kerson
(Kerst) at St. Michaels & Zion Church. Juliana Kerson (Kerst) was born in Oley
Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania on March 2, 1734. According to the will
of her brother Frantz, she was living in Reading Pennsylvania in 1765. She was
the daughter of Johann Henrich Kerson (Kerst) and Eva Rosina Ritter. She died
on December 13, 1803 in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
Christian died on January 27, 1814 in Cumru Township, Berks County,
Pennsylvania.
