Bankhead, William S. Captain Company I 16th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. The Sixteenth was organized at Courtland, Alabama August 6, 1861. Ordered to Knoxville, it was there placed in Gen. Zollikoffer's brigade. mk---Capt William S Bankhead, aged 72 years and 4 months, died at his home in Courtland last Friday night.

Capt W S Bankhead was born in Virginia. He was a lineal descendant of President Thomas Jefferson. He was first captain of Company I of Sixteenth Alabama Regiment for a time. He contracted inflammatory rheumatish and returned home on sick leave, and when the regiment passed through Courtland on its way to Corinth, he resigned his commission. He almost lost the use of a leg from rheumatism.
Capt Bankhead married (1) Martha Jane Watkins, on August 6, 1851, daughter of Paul J Watkins and Elizabeth Watt with no living issue. He married (2) Miss Lizzie Garth and they had 2 daughters - Nannie married James Harvey Gilchrist and Lizzie who married William E Hotchkiss.
On Sept 21, 1868, he married (3) Catherine Gilchrist Garth, widow of Capt George Garth and they had one son, John Stuart. John Stuart died young.
