Idaho World Newspaper, Feb 3, 1888:
Died on Thursday, January 12, J. V. Himes, Jr., age 55 years and 9 mo. The funeral was held on Sunday, services conducted at Holy Trinity, by Rev. W. H. Sparling at 2 o"clock and the body interred in the Schuyler cemetery. Mr. Himes has been feeble since last Aug and his death was brought on by exposure to the last storm. When the blizzard came up he was worried about his smaller children who were at school and he started for them. His son Walter, who clerks at Arnold Brothers' store, fearing his father would go out into the storm to get the children, started home, but the father and children were not there. He found them at the house of Frank Straube. After remaining at Mr. Straube's a short time all started for home which was about a block away. In so going the party got lost and the heavy wind proving too much for the father, Walter had him to wait by a tree until he could get the children to the house and return for him. When he returned he saw death written in his father's face and before he could be removed he had passed from this life and was carried to the house a corpse.
Mr. Himes had been a resident of this county and city for many years and was a person whom every one respected on account of the upright life which he lived. His death is a deep affliction to his devoted wife and children and the sympathies of the many friends of the family are with them in their sufferings. The Quill, Schuyler, Colfax County, Nebraska, Jan 18, 1888
Joshua Himes came west to Oregon in 1863 then moved back to Idaho by 1866. He resided at Pioneerville, Boise County, Idaho. In 1880 census they are again living in Richland, Colfax, Nebraska.
