Douglas J. "Cubby" Eschler was born to Max J. Eschler and Katherine Deanna Johnson Eschler on 28 November 1947 at Montpelier, Idaho. He followed his father's footsteps and joined the U.S. Army. Douglas Eschler was a decorated U.S. Army paratrooper and helicopter pilot with two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a CW3 officer stationed in Germany. He was flying a Chinook Helicopter on 11 September 1982 at an air show celebrating the 375th year Anniversary of Mannheim, Germany. The helicopter mechanically malfunctioned and crashed on 11 September, 1982 on autobahn near the Mannheim Airport. "Cubby" tried to maneuver his failing craft to save lives. He died along with 46 other people. A Monument was erected to honor the crash victims in 2003 at the Mannheim Airport. "Cubby" was returned home to his loving parents and was buried at Montpelier Cemetery, Montpelier, Bear Lake County, Idaho.
