Marcellus Bailey Dies
Was Patent Attorney and Union Veteran of Civil War
Marcellus Bailey, patent attorney, died yesterday, after a short illness, at his residence, 2301 Connecticut Avenue Northwest. He was in his eighty-first year. Mr. Bailey was former Vice President of the Metropolitan Club and former President of the Alibi Club. He was a member of the Loyal Legions. He was a native of Cincinnati, Ohio and served during the Civil War as a Major in an Ohio regiment. His father was Gamaliel Bailey, publisher of the National Era, the anti-slavery paper in which Uncle Tom’s Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe, first appeared.
Mr. Bailey is survived by a son, Frank M. Bailey of Norristown, Pennsylvania and a daughter, Miss Emelyn W. Bailey of this city. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock at Oak Hill Chapel. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
