Asa was the son of Abraham and Susanna (Whittemore) Gates. He married 1st Mary Roberson. She died October 20, 1817. He married 2nd on October 14, 1825, Mira Cone. She filed for bounty land, using his War of 1812 service record and was granted 120 acres of land. Asa and Mary (Roberson) Gates were the parents of Eliza Laura who married Orlin Colburn.
