His father, James, was from New York, and his mother, Mary, was from Maine. He is listed along with four brothers in the 1880 Census. In the 1870 Census he had two more brothers who were older. In the 1900 census of his parents it reflects that they had 12 children (8 were then still living - see also 1910 Census of widowed mother).
