Inscription
In Memory of
M^rs Alithea Stiles.
Relict of the Late
Rev^d ABEL STILES.
who departed this Life
Feb^ry 17th 1786:
In the 77th Year
of her Age.
On the face of the inscription, on the day Alithea died she was 76 years old, and Ætatis (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of her Age) 77. However, her recorded date of birth at Duxbury, Mass. in May 1710 indicates the inscription is incorrect, as she was by record only 75 years old, and Ætatis 76. For the inscription to be correct the year of her birth could only have been 1709, which seems unlikely as her father, a minister of the Congregational Church, would not, and contrary to doctrine, have waited nearly 14 months to have his daughter baptised.
