In the name of God, Amen I Sampson B. Cantrell of the Akin Precinct in the county of Hamilton and State of Illinois of the age of fifty eight years and being of sound mind and memory do make publish and declare this my last will and testament in the manner following that is to say first I give and bequeath to my Wife Mary C. Cantrell the following described Real Estate: Part North East fourth (1/4) of the South West quarter of Section Elleven (11) containing Thirty Nine (39) Acres and part of the North West fourth of the south West quarter of Section Eleven (11) in the North East corner of said tract containing 2 ½ Acres all in of the above lands lying in Township Seven (7) South of Range Six East and to my daughter Eliza F. Cantrell and lastly I give and bequeath all the rest residue and various div Of my personal estate goods and chattles of what nature or kind gaved??? to my Wife Mary C. Cantrell whom I hereby appoint Sole Executrix of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made. This stone is inscribed Mary Catherine Pemberton Cantrell and it is shared with James Franklin Pemberton.
Pemberton was NOT Mary's maiden name. James Franklin Pemberton was Mary's first husband; they married in 1852 and had six children. James died in the Civil War in 1862. Mary remarried Sampson Bethel Cantrell in 1874, but she was buried with her first husband.
Mary Catherine's maiden name was Lewis. Her parents were Jeremiah Thomas French Lewis and Phoebe (Vickers) Lewis.
