5 May 1862 a wagon train of 22 wagons from Putnam County, Missouri left for Oregon. Included in the train was Samuel's 20 year old nephew, Daniel "Bud" Allison McAlister, who later became and Oregon State Senator. Samuel Harvey was elected the captain of the Wagon train a post he held till they got to Ft. Karney. There the army told him his train was too small to travel across the plains because of the Indians. That same day another train led by Joseph Yount came and the two trains joined. Samuel elected 2nd captain of the stock of the Yount Wagon Train. Samuel & family liked the area of the Grande Ronde Valley and and he spent the rest of this life in the area. He caught a cold, which turned into pneumonia causing his death.
