Son of Robert Hairston and Margaret Smeltzer Hairston, he died of old age at his home four and one-half miles southwest of Fayetteville (Molino road) on Friday morning at three o'clock. He was born about two hundred yards of where he breathed his last and never lived anywhere else. He was the largest tax payer in the county and owed not a dollar. Probate records at Lincoln County Archives show he owned 2700 adjoining acres of land south of the Elk River, auctioned in Lincoln County, as well as a shot gun, plus land in Bedford County that sold at auction in that county for $2,658.00. He and his first wife the former Martha P. Koonce had four girls and three boys, of which two* passed on before him. He was one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of the county and was respected for the upright manner in which he dealt with his fellow man.

NOTE: (*Robert Philip Hairston and Manley M. Hairston, Jr. died before Manley did. Also, an unnamed infant - b&d Apr 1, 1857 - is not mentioned above.)
