Sarah Virginia Powers was born in the state of Carolina on August 31, 1845.
In early childhood she emigrated with her parents to Indiana where she grew to woman hood. She was united in marriage to Nelson Burgess, Dec. 21, 1862. After almost 55 years of companionship he preceeded her to the better land Aug 3, 1917.
To this union were born three children, the oldest son dying in child[hood and the daughter in infancy. One son W. E. Burgess of Des Moines sitll lives to mourn the loss of a dear loving mother.
One grandson also survives also one brother, Mr. B. Powers of Plymouth, Ind. She had a host of friends who will greatly miss her.
In the strength of young womanhood and manhood Mr. and Mrs Burgess moved from Indiana to Iowa and became real pioneers, settling in Dallas County, coming to Elkhart Township, Polk County in December 1873 and unto their home farm in 1874. This was their home for 37 years when the infirmation of age made it seem wise to move to Des Moines that they might liver near their son.
Mother Burgess accepted Christ as her Savior in 1884 and she and her husband became charter members of the White Oak U. B. Church. For more than 35 years she knew and loved her Savior and loved the blessed book, being often seen especially in the last few months reading the Word of Life. After much suffering she was released and entered into rest December 27, 1919 aged 74 years, three months and 26 days.
