Thomas was the son of Thomas Gilliam and Martha Jones. He married Sarah Elizabeth Roulston on February 17, 1874 in Marion County, Tennessee. The family moved to Missouri sometime between 1900 and 1910.

ahd (sic, had) been a resident of
this county for the past 18 years,
having moved his family here from
Marion county, Tennessee, in the
