Mrs. Juanita Leona Bailey Sloan, 83 of Blackshear, passed away Sunday morning, September 27, 2015, at the Hospice Satilla Hospice House following a short illness.
Born in Waycross, GA on November 11, 1931, she had lived in Pierce County all of her adult life. Mrs. Sloan and her late husband, Hubert William Sloan, Sr., ran a child care business, Children’s Corner Day Care, from their home for many years and were known by everyone as Mama “Granny” and Papa Sloan. The Sloan’s touched many children’s lives over the years and if you grew up not staying with them, you wanted to. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
She was a daughter of the late Jesse Franklin Bailey, Sr. and Juanita Harvey Bailey. Other than her husband, Mrs. Sloan was also preceded in death by an infant son, Elbert Sloan; a step-daughter, Janelle Hickox; two sisters, Patricia “Pat” Murray and Linda Herrin; and a brother, Jesse Bailey, Jr.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Connie Sue & George Dryden of Hoboken; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert & Glenda Griffin of Douglas, and Tony & Michelle Griffin and Hubert “Huz” Sloan all of Blackshear; two step-sons, Jerry & Susan Sloan of Blackshear and Jimmy & Marion Sloan of Hartsville, SC; two sisters, Annette Griffin of Blackshear and Joan Herrin of Waycross; a brother, Richard (Sharon) Bailey of Screven; 15 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews & other relatives.
Mrs. Sloan’s children are honoring her wishes to not have any services for her. If you would like to visit with the family you are welcome to stop by their home.
Memorialization will be by cremation.
