He was adopted by Platt Palmer and Angeline Carpenter at the age of 5, and his name was changed to Orlando William Palmer. A Civil War veteran, he served briefly under his original name with Company F, 194th Regiment, New York Infantry, at the age of 18 in 1865.
He married on 1 January 1871 Elizabeth "Libbie" Winn; they had five children.
Orlando Palmer died age 25 May 1930 in Petersburg, Rensselaer, NY, and was buried in the (Old) Maple Grove Cemetery.
