Caswell Peurifoy was one of six children born to Arrington and Sarah Pritchett Peurifoy. About the year 1800 Arrington moved from North Carolina to central Georgia.
His father was born in Craven County, North Carolina, the Son of Thomas Purifoy and Sallie Arrington.
Caswell was named for General Richard Caswell, Revolutionary War Hero and first Governor of the State of North Carolina.
The name was intentionally changed from Purifoy to Peurifoy to reflect the change from the strict Free Will Baptist belief to the Methodist Movement in the early 19th century.
The spelling is often used interchangeably.
The original gravestone, which is upright, is not pictured on the web page. On that part, the last name is spelled, Purefoy.
