Brigadier General Walter Alexander Dumas was born March 24, 1893, in Rockdale, Texas (Milam County), the only child of DeBerry Glenn Dumas and Elizabeth Holland (Bessie) Leecraft.

The 1910 Federal Census for Mineral Wells, Texas (Ward 2) (Palo Pinto County) (E.D. 190) showed Walter A. Dumas, age 16, born in Texas with a Father born in Arkansas and a Mother in North Carolina. He was living with his parents, DeBerry and Elizabeth Dumas who were shown to have been married for 17 years and who had given birth to one child. Deberry was shown to be age 40, a bookkeeper, born in Arkansas with a Father born in Mississippi and a Mother in Tennessee. His wife, Bessie, was age 36, born in North Carolina with both parents born in North Carolina.

Walter graduated from the University of Texas in the Class of 1917. He then registered for the World War I draft on June 5, 1917 in Falls County, Texas. His registration showed that he was age 23, and that his home was Reagan, Texas (Falls County). It further showed that he was born on March 24, 1894 in Rockdale, Texas, that he was a farmer by trade, and that he was currently employed with Wardlaw & Rogers in Reagan. He listed himself as single and of Ethiopian race. The registar wrote on the registration card that Walter was of medium height and build, with black hair and eyes.

The 1920 Federal Census for Overseas Military, Philippine Islands, Military and Naval Forces (E.D. Fort William McKinley), showed 1st Lieutenant Walter A. Dumas, age 25, born in Texas with a Father born in Arkansas and a Mother in North Carolina. Walter was shown to be single, white, and able to read and write. His stateside address was listed as 1101 West 37th Street, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Walter married Josephine Lawson, and they had two children, a daughter named Jay Lawson Dumas, and a son, Walter Alexander Dumas, Jr.

The 1930 Federal Census for Highlands, New York (Orange County) (E.D. 23) showed Walter Dumas, age 36, born in Texas, holding the rank of Captain, and stationed at the United States Military Academy where he was an instructor. His wife, Josephine, lived with him, but her birthdate and birthplace were listed as unknown. Living with them were two children: Joyce Dumas, age 4, and Walter Dumas Jr., birthdate shown as unknown. Clearly, the censustaker spoke with officials at the Academy other than Captain Dumas to glean this limited information.

By the outbreak of World War II, Walter had advanced to the rank of Brigadier General. From 1942-1943, he served as Commandant of the Tank Destroyer Replacement Center. In 1943, he became Director of Plans & Operations for the US Army Forces in the South Pacific. And then from 1943-1945 he was Director of Plans & Operations for the 10th Army. He retired from the Army in 1947.

Walter died at age 58 on September 11, 1952, in San Francisco, California. His wife died in 1970 in San Francisco.

Walter is listed in Who's Who in American History. Volume 3, 1951-1960. Chicago: Marquis Who's Who, 1966. (WhAm 3).
