COL. DONALD AMES U.S. Air Force, Retired Oct. 31, 1932 - Jan. 19, 2010. Col. Donald Lewis Ames passed away at the age of 77, Jan. 19, 2010, after surgery at a hospital in Las Vegas. Donald was born Oct. 31, 1932, in La Grange, Ill., the son of the late Ruth I. Ames and Kenneth S. Ames. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; son, Gregory Scott; sister, Ruth Anne Mosier of Johns Island, S.C.; and two brothers, Kenneth B. of Bel Air, Md., and John C. of Colorado Springs, Colo. Donald married Shirley Leask Jan. 12, 1968, in Key West, Fla. They resided most recently in Henderson and Driggs, Idaho. Donald graduated from U.S.A.F. flight training in 1955. During his service until retirement in 1976, he flew single place fighter interceptors, attended the air war college in Alabama, and served in the Pentagon. Flying was his passion and he was able to continue with a variety of his personal aircraft until 2009. A private memorial service for Donald will be held at the chapel at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Burial will follow with full military honors.
