Born Joseph John Bond in Lancashire, England to John Bond and Mary Frith.

Joseph changed the family name to Dodd in 1872-73. Weither this was a legal name change or he just did it is unknown (as of 2012).

Joseph came to the United States in 1860 and served in the Union Army (New York) during the Civil War. After the war, he returned to England and married Betsey Brooke Rigg. Joseph came to the U.S. a second time and settled in Middletown, Connecticut about 1870. Betsey followed the next year with son John Alfred and possiple Joseph Henry. Joseph Henry died in 1871 according to family tradition. Weither this was in England before his mother and brother John left for the U.S., enroute to the the U.S. or after arriving in Middletown is unknown (as of 2012)

While living in England after the Civil War, Joseph took up the bookkeeping trade. This is the trade which was his carrer here in the United States.

Joseph became a Naturalized Citizen in 1880.
