Union county's rank of old soldiers lessened in the passing of John Nelson, Age 89, Confederate Warrior.
He served under General Robert E Lee. The inevitable arm of death stretched forth and lessened the fast fading ranks of Civil War Veterans in this Union County, Saturday when John Nelson, age 89, a Confederate Veteran died at the home of a son, Morgan Nelson, near Liberty.
Funeral services were held at the Boxville Church, conducted by Mr. Tom Riggs. Burial was made in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at Boxville.
Mr Nelson was born in Person County, North Carolina on Aug 22, 1840. At an early age he left that state, going with an uncle to Texas where he spent 1 1/2 (one and one half) years. He left there when the Civil War broke out with Hood's Brigade and going to Richmond. At Richmond he was transferred and served under the command of the famous Southern General, Robert E. Lee. During the last year of the war, 1865, Mr Nelson was captured by the Union Armies on March 25, and was confined in a Long Island prison until Aug of the same year at which time he was released.
In 1867, he came to Kentucky locating in Hopkins Co. where he met and married Miss Sarah Jane Mitchell. To this union was born nine children. In 1874 Mr Nelson came with his family to make his home in Union Co. after having lived a short time in Webster County. After locating in this county, he became the possessor of a large quantity of farm land and engaged extensively in the farming business. Mr Nelson was a staunch Democrat and a citizen who commanded the respect and admiration of those with whom he became acquainted.
Seven of his children survive, Mrs Nora Tilley, Mr Will Nelson; of Boxville, Mrs Susan Miller of this County, Tom Nelson of Robards, Ky. Morgan Nelson of Liberty, Mrs Valeria Griggs of Clay, Ky., Mrs Hattie Adamson of Blackford.
