Alice was born in Lambeth, Surrey, England to William C. Thorogood and Isabella Mowat Sutherland. She had three siblings: William, Christiana, and Wilhemina. She married Edward Vincent Ahearn in 1915 and they had two children, Edward and Dorothy. After Edward's death she married Thomas Francis Austin in 1942. They had no children. She died in Long Island City, New York and is buried in Flushing, New York.
