He was ordained a Passionist Father 6/11/1949. His First Solemn Mass was said at Holy Name of Mary church, Calvary, Ky on 6/12/1949. He took the name Fr. Columban at that time, but later when permitted to do so, took back his original name.

Father WILLIAM BROWNING, 84 died Dec. 20, 2005, in Chicago, Ill. Father Browning was born June 12, 1921, in Calvary. He is preceded in death by: his parents, J. Lee and Agnes Browning; one brother, Father Lawrence Browning; and a sister, Rita Neudecker. Survivors include: four sisters, Josephine Browning of Lebanon, Sister Clarita Browning and Sister Marie Goretti Browning, both of Owensboro, and Rita Watts of Louisville. A funeral Mass was held Dec. 23 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Newburg Road, Louisville, with burial in the church cemetery.
