August 13, 1933 - January 26, 2010.
Sidney L. Nally, 76, passed away, on January 26, 2010, at the Hospice & Palliative Care Facility, in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Sid was born in Cario, Kentucky, to James D. Nally and Louetta Duckworth, on August 13, 1933. He was the oldest of six children. Sid enlisted in the Air Force in 1951, and as an air policeman, was stationed at Indian Springs, Nevada, at the Atomic Proving Grounds. As an air policeman, he was assigned guard duty to a number of notables, including Bob Hope's USO Troupe.
He was transferred to Alaska, where he met and married his wife, Frances. After his discharge, he went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration. All five of their children were born in Alaska. He was transferred to Grand Junction, Colorado, in 1974, and retired from the F.A.A., after 39 years of service.
Not content to sit around, he worked at various jobs, including managing the Freeway Bowling Alley. He was employed by Raytheon Service Co., in 1989, and traveled extensively, throughout the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii.
He retired a second time, from Raytheon in 2004, and in his spare time, worked for Avis as a shuttle driver. He was an avid sportsman throughout his life. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, and was a devoted fan of the Broncos and the Rockies. He served as Secretary-Treasurer of the G.J. Men's Bowling Association, Director of the Colorado Men's State Association, and the board of Directors for the Coloramo Federal Credit Union, for a number of years.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved Alaska and Colorado, but his true home, was always Kentucky.
He leaves an uncle, aunt, two brothers, a sister, and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and other family members in Kentucky. His immediate family are his wife of 55 years, Frances; daughters: Lucy (Andy) Kolenut of Grand Junction; Kay (Gary) Schritter of Montrose; Carrie (Stuart) Rogers of Grand Junction; Beth Balerio; son, Paul Nally of Grand Junction; and unofficial adopted family, Janie and Wilbur Rose of Jones, Alabama; plus 11 loving grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Sid was a very loving and compassionate man. He never met a stranger, and leaves many friends behind. We will miss him very much.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the many hospice nurses, case workers, doctors, and others, who have been involved with his care, during his illness. We could not have done it without you.
A service will be held Friday, January 29, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, with Inurnment at the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, 3090 B North 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO., 81506.
