Amie Leaver Dennison, 70, of 5805 Fireside Drive, Brentwood, a retired school teacher and organizer of visual programs at universities across the nation, died yesterday in Park View Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Vine Street Christian Church. Dr. Dan Mosley and Walt Leaver will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Visitation with the family will start at noon today and continue throughout the day at Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Mrs. Dennison was a teacher in the former Davidson County and the Metro school systems for 33 years, first serving as a teacher at McCann School. She then taught at Sylvan Park School where she also developed the city's first elementary school library.
She spent her last 23 years with the Metro school system teaching blind and partially blind students at Howard School before retiring in 1970.
Afterwards, she worked for the American Printing House for the Blind for two years as librarian and member of its educational staff. She helped develop visual programs and established the first library at the printing house.
Mrs. Dennison traveled extensively across the U.S. exhibiting visual materials developed at the printing house to universities with academic disciplines designed to prepare students to teach the sightless and visually impaired.
She organized visual programs at Peabody College here, Syracuse University in New York, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Georgia State University in Atlanta, North Carolina State University in Raleigh and at East Tennessee State University at Johnson City.
A native of Davidson County, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary Leaver. She had been married for 39 years to Durwood A. Dennison, also of Brentwood, her only immediate survivor.
She was a graduate of the old Nashville Central High School and earned a bachelor of science degree, library science degree and a masters degree from Peabody College. She also studied briefly at Wayne State University in Detroit.
She was a life member of the Council for Exceptional Children and had held various offices in that organization. She was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority while at Peabody College.
She was a member of Vine Street Christian Church.
