A SPLENDID CITIZEN IS CALLED BY DEATH-----There's something unusually touching and sad, when it comes to chronicling the passing of an elderly citizen who has lived a useful, couragous and clean life that shall live on as a benediction to those with whom he came in daily contact. Such was the life of John B. Alexander who passed to his reward on the 26th day of this month. His neighbord who knew him intimately and who saw daily his deeds of kindness feel strongest his loss from the community, and realize most fully what the lives of such men mean in this day of hurry and forgetfulness. A good man who lived a life worthy of emulation both from point of precept and example has passed on to his eternal reward, and his life though now a vivid memory will count for good among his relatives and friends.
For more than a year the physical condition of the deceased had been growing weaker, and for the past ten days he had been under the tenderest watchcare of his loved ones and his neighbors who came to minister gently to his needs.
It is said by those who were with him in his last days that not a complaint fell from his lips. He bore his suffering with becoming fortitude and was mindful at all times of the welfare of his attending friends. He seemed to forget self even in his last days, and to think more of the comfort of his friends than of himself. None but those blessed with an unselfish disposition could do this; but by nature he was given to such commendable thoughtfulness. John B. Alexander was a true friend, a hospitable neighbor and a loving and devoted relative and a clean upright Christian gentleman. What more could be said of a man!
The subject of this sketch was born in Pickens County, South Carolina, July 1, 1857. He moved to Hopkins County, Texas in the year 1881 where he lived for two years and then moved to Travis County. From Travis County he moved to Menard in the year 1884 where he spent the remainder of his useful life. During his last years he made his home with his sister, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Powell where he received every kindness and the best of care. Deceased had two brothers, Joab Alexander of South Carolina and James Alexander who precedded him in death. His sisters are Mrs. Joe Powell of Menard, Mrs. John Perry Lynch of Blanket, Texas and Mrs. J. T. Giltrap who preceeded him in death.
Deceased was a member of the Episcopal Church. His body was ......
