Nellie married E. P. Laney on May 3, 1892 in Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri. She had her first baby Mary Ellen (May) on March 2, 1893. In 1900 she was living in Perry County, Missouri with her father and daughter May. She was 33 years old and already a widow.
Within the next few years, she married George Silies. They had 3 children together: William, Arthur, and Fred. They lived in Perryville, Missouri and later moved to St. Louis.
When grandson Harry was a boy, Nellie fell down the stairs and split her head open. Harry was the only one who would help the doctor by holding the split closed so the doctor could stitch her up. She was called Little Grandma by the family. Her son Bill described her as 100% Irish and did not take squat from anyone.
