CONWAY James Ralph Holbert Jr., 85, of Magnolia Hill on Kingston Street, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Conway Hospital after an illness.

He was born in Conway, a son of the late James Ralph Holbert Sr. and Janie Cox Holbert.

He was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Men's Fellowship Class and was a Sunday school teacher.

He was a member of the Conway Rotary Club and Horry Post No. 111 of the American Legion. Before retiring, he was the owner of Holbert and Holbert, Public Accountants, in Myrtle Beach. He was a member of the S.C. Accountants Association. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a first lieutenant, received a battlefield commission and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge. He attended the University of Chicago and the University of North Carolina.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Mae Boyd Anderson Holbert; a brother, Alexander S. Holbert Sr.; and a sister, Ardath Holbert Burroughs.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine F. Holbert; a son, James R. Holbert III and his wife, Helga, of Colonial Heights, Va.; two daughters, Martha Holbert Gore of Conway and Jane Holbert Talbert and her husband, Roy, of Conway; a stepdaughter, Dawne C. Clonts and her husband, Danny, of Conway; two brothers, Wendell J. Holbert Sr. of Conway and Conrad A. Holbert of Rock Hill; a sister, Annabelle B. Hoy of Conway; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carl Hunsucker will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery.
