Joseph went to Canada and there married Harriet Dodge. From this union four sons and four daughters were born: Thomas (1813-1849), Truman (1813-1853), Melinda Bates Hancock (1815-1849), Joseph J (1817-1866), Harriet Bates Landon (1820-1862), Mary Bates Barrett (1822-1894), James Bates (1823-1908) and Elizabeth Bates Alvord (1827-1907).

In 1846 Joseph married Rebecca Borton (1812-1873). Four children were born to Joseph and Rebecca: Rhoda Bates Barber (1846-1879), Oliver (1848-1850), Stephen (1850-1923) and Elnathan (1853-1924).

Joseph Bates was the first permanent settler in Franklin Township. Ohio. In 1833 he was innkeeper for J Bates Inn. He and family moved to Nevada County, Iowa where he died of tuberculosis.

The Fulton County History document verifies Joseph's birth date which was in question due to dates on his tombstone.
