(Top right is picture of Maria's 7 children) Maria Herbst was born in France married Andrew Herbst in Guewenheim France at 9 AM 7 Jul. 1842 and moved to America close to 1844 - 45. Her mother was Anne Eve Rouche and her father was Thiebaud Wetzel who died in Pugeot, France 26 Jan. 1826. The Herbst family settled in Chickasaw County Iowa raising their Children and later moved to Burwell, Nebraska where she and her husband Andrew Herbst are buried.

The year thousand eight hundred twenty one, the 20th of January at 4 p.m., before us mayor and Public Record Officer of the municipality of Angeot, Fontaine county, Haut-Rhin département, appeared in the Town Hall Sir Thiébaud WETZEL, blacksmith aged 33 domiciled in this municipality, who declared and presented to us a female child, born today at 12 a.m., from him and his wife Anne Eve ROUECHE aged 30, and whom he declared to have given the name of Marie-Louise, the said statement and presentation done in the presence of Sirs Jean-Nicolas GEORGE primary school teacher aged 53 and Jean Baptiste ROUECHE farmer aged 61, the two of them domiciled in this municipality of Angeot, and the father and witnesses signed with us the present birth record after it has been read to them. Made in the Town Hall of Angeot, the above-mentioned day, month and year.

and Marie Louise WETZEL, laborer, aged 22, born in Angeot, domiciled today in Guewenheim, of age, daughter of late Thiébaut WETZEL dead at Angeot Jan 26th 1826, as recorded in the files of Angeot, and Anne Eve ROUECHE, housewife, domiciled in Angeot, present and accepting... (follow legal mentions about publications of the banns at Guewenheim and Angeot, and declaration that the marriage is registered) ... of which we have written this record in the presence of, 1st Antoine HERBST journalier aged 32, 2nd Joseph HERBST usher (appariteur in France was a municipality employee equipped of a drum, who announced in the streets of the village the community events) aged 28, brothers of the bride, 3rd Jean Jacques KRÉE aged 32, and 4th Jean Baptiste KRÉE aged 30, cousins of the groom, the four of them domiciled in Guewenheim, who signed the present record with us and the contractants after we have been reading it to them.
