God welcomes into his fold one of his sheep. Halsie Leola Garrett Godwin left our presence to return home, Saturday, January 23, 2010. Born on February 18, 1925, she was the fourth of six siblings. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer C. "Punk" Godwin; in-laws, Willie Talton Godwin and Capitola Eva Godwin; her first grandson, Daniel Aaron Seely; her mother, Mattie Levada Garrett; her father, David Allen Garrett; brothers, Sterling and Earl Garrett; sisters, Nettie Taylor, Opal VanWassenhove and Marjorie May Tharp. Survivors include her children, Chanda D. Alford, Marco T. Godwin, Carol Roberts (Edwin); five grandchildren; great-grandchildren, who were her pride and joy. Mrs. Godwin was born in McDavid, FL and resided in Escambia County. She married on April 9, 1943, remaining in Pensacola during WWII. In support of our troops she worked at the Pensacola Navy Yard until the end of the war. The Godwin's raised three children together until she was widowed in 1968. She and the family spent hours exploring Pensacola Beach and collecting shells. Later in life she earned her high school diploma from Pensacola Adult High School and worked as a Dispatcher for Escambia County Animal Shelter until she retired in 1991.
