MARTINSVILLE MORNING POST, Martinsville, Va., Mon., March 22, 1937.
Mrs. Hersie P. Gardner, 97, a life-long resident of the Sydnorsville neighborhood in south Franklin county, died early Sunday morning at the home of her son, J. S. Gardner, a farmer of the community. She was born and reared in Franklin county and was known by hundreds of friends in the neighborhood. Services will be held Tuesday at the home. Burial will be in a family cemetery nearby. Her husband died several years ago. She is survived by two daughters and the one son who had been living at the old family place. The daughters are: Mrs. J. P. Copeland of Danville and Mrs. Iowa Respess of St. Augustine, Fla. She had been a member of the old Town Creek church for more than 80 years and lived in the Sydnorsville community for nearly a century.
Pallbearers were grandsons: George Ramsey, Kermit Ramsey, Herbert Ramsey, Percy Ramsey, Elijah Ramsey, Woodin Gardner, John Ramsey, Ben Gardner and Ewell Frith. Flower bearers were grandchildren: Mesdames J. I. Shumate, Bettie Peters, Elijah Ramsey, Misses Ruby Love, Mary Love, Lucille Ramsey, Louise Ramsey, Barbara Peters, Francis Gardener, Ruth Gardner and Callie Gardner.
