He was the son of Rev. Jacob Jones Janeway. He married Abigail Blackwood Howell on October 28, 1828.
They had five children:

3). Martha G. Janeway (November 27, 1833 - ). Married Doctor Charles Hodge on June 2, 1858.
4). Anna A. Janeway (December 3, 1835 - ) married Rev. Nathaniel L. Upham on June 5, 1861.
5). Reverend Joshua H.B. Janeway (1838 - ). Chaplain of the 199th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.
