Elma L. Higdon, 87, lifetime resident of Escambia County, went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Thursday, January 21, 2010. Elma was the daughter of Seaborn and Nancy Brewton Chavers. She was predeceased by her husband Oscar, parents, 4 brothers, 1 half-brother and 5 sisters.
Elma was a charter member of Plainview Baptist Church where she served the Lord in many capacities, including Sunday School Director and teacher. Elma always experienced great joy in exploring the Holy Land.
Elma's love of children was reflected by her many years of working with younger children in her church and 17 years in Escambia County public schools.
Mrs. Higdon is survived by her children, Louis (Theresa) Higdon, Prescott, AZ., Beverly (Michael) Berdofe, Des Moines, IA., and Michael (Bethany) Higdon, Jensen Beach, Fl. She also leaves 5 grandchildren, Richard (Eve) Higdon, Cedar Park, TX., Kevin Higdon, Evanston, IL., Lauren (Paul) Stewart, Denver, CO., Aaron Berdofe, Minneapolis, MN., and Andrew Higdon, Portland, OR., 2 great-grandchildren, Katherine (Katie) Higdon, Cedar Park, TX., and Hugh Stewart, Denver, CO. Elma also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends to mourn her passing.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, January 25, 2010 at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North-Cantonment. Interment will be at Pensacola Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, January 24, 2010 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm
