The son of Samuel & Elizabeth (Sheibley) Baker, he married Catharine Kell and fathered Flora Ann (b. 07/09/58*, d. 03/16/69), Emma Retta (b. 12/09/59), Mary Anjelina (b. 08/19/61), John William (b. 04/02/66), Charles Walter (B. 02/10/69), Henry "Harry" (b. 11/16/71), Linnie Prudence (b. 01/02/76), and James Diven (b. 06/20/77). In 1860, he was carpenter living in Spring Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 7" tall with black hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 5 as a private with Co. G, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
