In 1860, he was carpenter living in Spring Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 7" tall with black hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 5 as a private with Co. G, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
