John Buchanan enlisted in the 31st Infantry (Co G) on 8/23/1861-4/2/1862.

Cedar Hill records show he was 73 years 11 months 27 days old and was born in PA.

John Buchanan entered the service on August 23, 1861 and was discharged on July 2, 1862. (Surgeon's Certificate of Disablilty.)

The 31st Regiment, Ohio Infantry mustered in August 4, 1861 at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio. They were mustered out July 20, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.

During his service, Company G: Marched to Somerset, Ky., December 12, 1861, and to relief of Gen. Thomas at Mill Springs, Ky., January 19-21, 1862. Moved to Louisville, Ky., February 10-16, thence to Nashville, Tenn., February 18-March 2. March to Savannah, Tenn., March 20-April 8. Advance on and siege of Corinth, Miss., April 29-May 30. Pursuit to Booneville May 31-June 6. March to Iuka, Miss., with skirmishing June 22, thence to Tuscumbia, Ala., June 26-28, and to Huntsville, Ala., July 18-22.

In the 1860 US Census, John (39 years) and Elizabeth (35 years) can be found living in the Bowling Green Township, Licking County, OH with:
--Mary Buchanan - 10 years
--George Buchanan - 7 years
--Rachel Buchanan - 5 years
--James Buchanan - 1 year
--Mary Baney - 57 years (her mother?)
--James Baney - 24 years
