Coal and lumber merchant Smith Cutter Coddington was born on 3 September 1812 in Woodbridge, New Jersey, to James Coddington and Ann Cutter. He married first Frances Eliza Freeman on 19 August 1834 in Rahway, New Jersey. Their children were James, Emma, and Edward Coddington. Frances died in 1841. Smith married second much younger Mary Lawrence Inman in a secret ceremony on 16 May 184 in New York City. Their children were Anna, Margaret, Frances, Henry, Charles, and Walter Coddington, as well as a pair of twins. Smith Cutter Coddington died, 13 May 1868, aged 55, in Rahway, New Jersey, and was buried at Hazelwood Cemetery. Brother-in-law Edward Gridley was appointed guardian of Smith's minor children.
