A leader in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Georgia. His wife Caroline was born November 1833 in Ohio, the daughter of Caroline Lee Whiting and Nicholas Marcellus Hentz (Caroline Lee Hentz was a famous Southern novelist rivaling Harriet Beecher Stowe). James and Caroline were married over forty years. Together they had nine children, but only six were alive as of 1900, three sons and three daughters.
