Services for Julia A. Nugent, 96, were held at Avoca Baptist with Rev. Joel Grimes, pastor and Rev. R.O. Browder officiating. Mrs. Nugent died at W.D. Kight home in Stamford. She was Stamford's oldest resident. Mrs. Nugent moved in with the W.D. Kight family in 1936. Mrs. Nugent used to help Mrs. Kight with her children.

Julia A. Wharton married Robert O. Nugent in 1861 in Louisiana. The couple moved to Texas by ox wagon in 1867, it took six weeks to arrive in Waco. The couple moved to Alexander in Erath County before moving to Jones County in 1901.

Mrs. Nugent was baptized by Dr. Rufus C. Burleson in the Brazos River, near Waco in 1868. Dr. Burleson was the first president of Baylor College.

Mrs. Nugent was preceded in death by four children.

Survived by two nephews - Henry Harwell and George Pilley; three nieces - Mrs. Clara Crews, Mrs. Edna Firsch, Mrs. Vera Bynum.

Both Robert Nugent and Miss Julia Wharton were raised in Louisiana and grew up in the same area. They moved to Texas in 1867, reaching Waco on 1 September 1867.

Mrs. Nugent became a member of the Baptist Church at Waco in 1868. She was baptized by Rev. Rufus Burleson in the Brazos River. Dr. Burleson was the first presidnt of Baylor College, which is now Baylor University. Mr. and Mrs. Nugent moved to Avoca some years ago.
