Glendi "Sug" Branscome lived to be 104. On Dec. 13, Hillsville Town Council passed a resolution asking VDOT to name a bridge near where he lived in his honor.

His name has a chance to live on even longer.

In its Dec. 13 meeting, Hillsville Town Council voted unanimously to petition the Virginia Department of Transportation to name the new U.S. 52 bridge spanning the U.S. 58 Bypass after Branscome, who died on Jan. 18, 2010.

If it is approved, Hillsville will pay for half of the cost of the signage.

"I think it's a great idea," said Mayor Bill Tate in introducing the resolution.

Greg Yonce made the motion to adopt the resolution, which was seconded by Ed Terry. The motion passed unanimously.

A day later, the Carroll County Board of Supervisors agreed to pay the remainder of the sign costs.

County Administrator Gary Larrowe broached the subject at the Supervisors' meeting, which was received positively by the assembly.

"He had a different sense of humor, he was a real character," said Chairman Wes Hurst. "I'd be very overwhelmingly welcome to go ahead and taking a motion this evening on that."

Laurel Fork Supervisor Andy Jackson made the motion to share costs, which was seconded by Sulphur Springs Supervisor David Hutchins. It passed unanimously, as well.

Branscome was born on Oct. 28, 1905 in Gladesboro before moving into his new home on U.S. 52 South when he was a month old. His mother passed away when he was 6, which meant he and his siblings had to learn to cook.

He walked two miles each day to attend Mine Branch School. After seventh grade, he attended Sunny Side School, where he met his future wife, Sadie Martin.

The couple was married on Dec. 29, 1926 and had four children, Betty, Jack, Donnie and Roger. Branscome had nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

When the couple was first married, Branscome owned a Model T Ford and traded it for a cow. He later traded the cow for the land he and his wife built their house upon for $125.

Branscome worked in the hosiery mill for 15 years, walking three miles daily. People would stop and pick him up for a ride, but he would refuse, saying walking is less crowded. He later painted houses, churches and office buildings.

His hobbies included baseball, fishing, hunting, trapping and dancing. He once killed two turkeys with one shot at age 90.

On Feb. 23, 2001, Sadie passed away after 74 years of marriage. His daughter, Betty, visited him twice daily after that and always fixed his supper.

To commemorate Branscome's 100th birthday, a parade was held in town in his honor, as well as a party at Ruben's Red Lantern in Fancy Gap. Family came from Hawaii, Idaho, Georgia and Virginia to celebrate.

On Oct. 16, 2009, Branscome fell and broke his hip. He had surgery later and recovered well. When he was discharged, he returned home with home health care and later hospice.

The bridge on U.S. 52, while new, is part of the roadway Branscome walked upon daily. That significance is included in Hillsville's resolution.
