William Napoleon Hiler was elected sheriff of Frio County, Texas, on June 9, 1873 (at the young age of 19) and served until February 15, 1876.

He married Bettie T. Slaughter on Wednesday, January 13, 1875, in Frio County.

He was elected the first sheriff of Sterling County, Texas on Wednesday, May 20, 1891. Sterling County records show him to be both sheriff and tax collector in 1891. He was re-elected on November 8, 1892 and served until, November 6, 1894.

1870 census has him with his parents and siblings in Uvalde, Texas. 1870 Uvalde County Census lists the family as:
Hiler, William S 42, Mary 36, James 19, William 17*, Robert 15, Mary 13, Arabella 11, Joshua 7, Sarah 3, Francis 1.

William S, Mary, Arabella, Joshua, Sarah, Francis, Walker and Rebeca.

1900 Uvalde Census list Mary and daughter Sallie living together as one household.

1880, there is a W.N., Bettie and their children (Johnnie b.1877, Robert b.1878 and Willie b.1879) in Tom Green County (Precinct 2)raise cattle. His brother James and his wife (Francis, along with her mother Larinda Cox) were also in Tom Green County Precinct 2 in 1880.

By 1884, they were in Sterling City, Texas.

Ada Hiler married James W. Young in El Paso on October 29, 1923. He was born October 2, 1895 in Cedar Town, GA and she was born September 11, 1895 in San Angelo, TX.

William died as a result of stomach cancer after a successful career as a rancher and sheriff.
