Son of Moncure and Charlotte Robinson. Served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War as a Colonel in the CA Corps of Engineers, attached to the staffs at various times of Generals Henry A. Wise, John C. Breckinridge, William "Grumble" Jones, and William W. Loring. At the end of the war he was the chief of Confederate railroads.
He served after the war as head of a number of Railroad companies, and at the time of his death was head of the Baltimore Steam Packet Company.
