William was born in Burleson County Texas to William Brookshire Smith and Fannie Ludia Duce. On 8 Sep 1901, He married Lue Ella Wells in Lee County, TX. Sometime in 1917, the Spanish Flu found it's way into the backwoods area of Lee County, and took a terrible toll on the families there. William and Lue Ella first lost their son Alex in 1917 and subsequently lost daughter Alma 15 Jan 1919, son Elmer Lee 17 Jan 1919, and his wife, Lue Ella died on 18 Jan 1919. Son, T.M. "Willie" died 19 Jan 1919. (Alma and Elmer were twins and one family member recollected they were buried in the same grave as their mother). William then lost his sister Mary Ann Smith Grant on 19 Jan 1919. The entire family is buried in the Sanders Cemetery, Lee county, TX.
William married Annie Lee Hammond Bradshaw 18 Jan 1920 in Lee County, TX.
