PORTSMOUTH, VA - Leslie R. Abbott Jr, 83, of The Pier condominium in Norfolk, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009 in Norfolk.

He was born and reared on South Street in Portsmouth.

He was a 1951 graduate of Columbia University in New York, with a BS in engineering and was a US Army veteran of World War II. He fought in Eastern France and Germany and was a Purple Heart recipient.

Mr. Abbott retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1975 as a metallurgical engineer.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Nan Sykes Abbott, and later by his companion, Betty A. Davis, who died in 2004.

Survivors include stepson, Michael C. Davis (Susan) of Ohio; sister-in-law, Caroline Walsworth of Arlington Heights, IL; a special lifelong friend and the minister conducting the service, Arline Sarver of Portsmouth; lifelong friends, Vera and Manley Henderson of Portsmouth; and many new friends at The Pier condominium.

A graveside service was at 1 pm Saturday, June 20, in Olive Branch Cemetery.
