EVELYNE VON TOBEL
1915 - 2010.

Evelyne Leonard Von Tobel, 94, of Las Vegas, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away Jan. 13, 2010. Evelyne was born March 16, 1915, in Provo, Utah, to James and Janet Leonard, the youngest of nine children. They were a very musical family and she was an accomplished singer.

She moved to Las Vegas in 1937 to be with her brother, Cliff, and his wife, Vennis Leonard, who owned Las Vegas Cleaners. While working at the Sweet Shoppe on Fremont Street, Evelyne met Ed Von Tobel Jr. They married May 6, 1939, at St. Joan of Arc Church on 2nd Street.

While her husband was busy managing the Von Tobel Lumber Company, Evelyne was home raising their four daughters, Sharon, Katherine, Susan and Gretchen. She was an excellent cook, homemaker and proud mother, actively involved with her daughters throughout their school years. She brought her love of music to her family, often inviting friends and family over the musical get-togethers.

Evelyne belonged to the Service League of Las Vegas and the women's Red Cross during World War II. An avid golfer, she enjoyed playing at the Municipal Golf Course, became president of the Desert Inn Women's Golf Association and was an active member of the Las Vegas Country Club. Ed and Evelyne contributed to many philanthropic projects throughout the years and helped to build the community of Las Vegas.

The couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in May of 2009. Edward passed away Dec. 29, 2009. Evelyne often said she could not live without him and passed away two weeks later. Evelyne is survived by her daughters, Sharon Schmitt, Katherine Acord (Gary), Susan Von Tobel, Gretchen McQuade (Sean); eight grandchildren, Tammy Schmitt Williams (John), Steven Schmitt (Sandy), Susie Schmitt Johnson (Danny), Jill Acord Keller (Kris), Heidi Acord Meats (Roy), Bridgette Acord Dooley (Travis), Mia Von Tobel and Shannon McQuade; and nine great-grandchildren, Justin Sorken, Andrew and Elizabeth Schmitt, Jacob Johnson, Teven and Tristine Keller, Brittnee and Breeanna Meats and Brody Dooley.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., with Vigil service at 6 p.m., Monday, Jan. 18, at Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne Ave. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1811 Pueblo Vista Drive. Celebration of life will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ed and Mary Von Tobel Endowment Fund at Bishop Gorman High School, 5959 S.
