John was a son Jacob Couch and Mary Brown. He married Lois P. Hutchins November 10, 1839 in Chester, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.
The children born to John and Lois were Nathaniel Brown, John Studley Jr., and Osborne Dallas.

"John Studley (Couch) was a sturdy, robust outdoorsman, jovial, outgoing and aggressive. A natural leader, he was ever in search activities that provided outlet for his driving energy. At the earliest eligible age he enlisted in the Chester unit of the New Hampshire State Militia, which gathered each May to accept enrollees and elect officers. John Studley advanced to captain and by 1850 had achieved the rank of colonel. From that time forward he is referred to in the historical records of that area as "colonel."
