Rachel Hargis Stephens, age 83, of 2604 Border Road, Chesapeake died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 27, 2009, at Chesapeake Health & Rehab Center.

Mrs. Stephens was a native of Person County, NC, daughter of the late Judd Lester and Carrie Gentry Hargis and wife of 63 years to William Earl Stephens who survives. She was a retired teacher and was of the Primitive Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband is three sons, Letcher Stephens and wife, Brenda, Jerry Stephens and wife, Stephanie and William Van Stephens, all of Chesapeake; five grandchildren: Wayne Stephens, Brian Stephens, Dean Stephens, Tim Stephens and Stacey S. Deputy.

Mrs. Stephens was preceded in death by five brothers, George, Lester, Baxter, Victor and Elbert Hargis and a sister, Mattie Hooper.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, in the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel by the Elder Jimmy Gray. Interment will follow in the Surl Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family received friends Tuesday, Dec. 29, from 7 till 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be James Deputy, Ralph Harris, Brian Stephens, Dean Stephens Jr., Tim Stephens and Wayne Stephens Jr.

Bobby Clark, Matthew Hooper and Don Whitfield will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Arrangements are by Strickland Funeral Home, 1314 North Main Street, Roxboro, NC 27573.
