Died John L. Baker of pneumonia, Friday, Oct. 26, 1883,
near Nebraska City, Nebraska, aged 78 years.
John L. Baker was born in Virginia June 20th, 1805. He was married at the age of 23 years, to Rachel Biggs, of Ohio, who survives him. Of his eight children five survive him, namely: Thomas N. and John W. of Franklin township, Rueben F. of Nebraska, Mrs. Margaret Westfall and Mrs. J.S. Cloud. Shortly after his marriage, he settled in Sangamon county, Ill., where he lived for more than thirty years. As some of his children wished to come to Kansas, he sold the old homestead and came to Ottawa in the fall of 1870, where he has resided ever since. While visiting his son in Nebraska, near Nebraska City, he was taken ill with pneumonia; although he had all that a skilled physician and careful nursing could give, he gradually sank. On Friday evening, Oct. 26th , he died. With him it was not death, it was only entering upon the joys of a fuller and better life.
Mr. Baker united with the M.E. Church at the age of 21 years, and remained a consistent member of the same until the time of his death. During his life, Father Baker was ever charitable, both in words and deeds, ever true to his convictions of right, and faithful in the performance of his duties. Many have conceived an ideal of purity; few make their lives a pattern of pure, thorough and Christian deeds. He has left as an inheritance to his children and grand-children, an example that contains untold wealth.
