Statesboro, GA -- Rufus Lee M/Sgt.E8 Retired, age 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, Sunday morning at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility, after a long illness. The Bulloch County native was a 1949 graduate of Portal High School. Following his graduation, Mr. Lee entered the U.S. Army and served in the Korean and Vietnam War, retiring in 1971 following 21 years of service. After his retirement Mr. Lee moved to Statesboro where he was employed by Georgia Southern Campus Security and the Postal Service of Georgia Southern for many years. Mr. Lee was a member of the American Legion Post 90 and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Dollie Lee and two brothers, Douglas and Herbert Lee. Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Jeannette Sparks Lee of Statesboro; three sons and daughters in law, Rufus Wendell and Lisa Lee of Statesboro, Ronald "Ronnie" and Sue Ann Lee of Statesboro, Lester Eugene "Gene" and Lin Lee of Stilson; a daughter, and son in law, Daniele and Darrell Mixon of Statesboro; nine grandchildren, Angel (Torrey)Parnell, Amy (Terrance)Forehand, Ashley Lee, Bridget Lee, Renee Lee, Alex Lee, Heather Lee, Matthew Mixon and Stephen Mixon and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Monday from 6-8 P.M. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2:00pm in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. William L. (Buddy) Morris and Rev. William F. (Bill) Brown SFC.E7 U.S. Army retired officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers will be Paul Moore, Joe Martin Newsome, Marcel Thompson, Rev. Donald Sparks, Roscoe Laircey, Earl Gambrell, Richard Scarboro, and Larry Lanier The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, Ga. 30459. Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home of Statesboro is in charge of arrangements.
